How will you use the most recent General Conference in your youth lessons?
I'm echoing the question jeans asked on twitter. How will you use the most recent General Conference in your youth lessons? This is also an open thread on anything regarding the October 2011 conference. What are your thoughts?

I think Elder Bednar's warning to not make his talk into a program was right on. Of course that's what we as members usually do! In addition to the content of the talk, his approach to youth: let them experiment, let them surprise you, they know technology (so training them would probably cause a laugh or rolled eyes anyway), and for heaven's sake don't turn this into a program! Great advice for the entire youth program! Let these youth get to work and surprise us!
ReplyDeleteSo... how do we encourage following his call to the youth without spoiling it? Do we bring it up at all? Do we suggest the girls use it as a Personal Progress project? How can we remind but not hover too closely?
(Same questions go for things like a presidency meeting as well. Any ideas?)
I hope that when the lesson formats change they have a week that is similar to the adults' Teaching for Our Times week. All the time we call the girls to "follow the prophet." How many of them are even aware of the latest words of the prophet?
ReplyDeleteScience Teacher Mommy- I totally, totally agree. Why use quotations from 1945 when we have a great, up-to-date talk from 6 months ago? From someone the girls have heard of? And often, we have apostles and YW general leaders addressing the very topics in the manuals, directly to the YW. How can we pass up that opportunity to 1, teach a better lesson, 2, show them to follow the prophets and apostles, and 3, show them that throughout their lives, the apostles and prophets will address issues related to them?
ReplyDeleteI have actually suggested that to the curriculum dept. Their response was something like, Great idea, we just haven't been given the instructions to proceed at this time on new manuals. So, they're aware. But perhaps a few extra emails couldn't hurt? :)
